Effects of Mother's Child-Rearing Value and Discipline Style on Adjustment of Young Children

Abstract

|
The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of mothers' child-rearing values and discipline styles on their young children's adjustment. Subjects of this study were 459 mothers having children in age group of 3 to 5. Data was analyzed with frequency, percentage, and Cronbach’s α and correlation by using SPSS 18.0 program. The test of model was done with analysis of correlation matrix in AMOS 22.0 program for path analysis. The results of this study were as follows: First, mothers' self-directed and social compliance child-rearing values had different effects on their discipline styles. While mothers' self-directed child-rearing values directly affected coercive corporal punishment and logical explanation; their social compliance child-rearing values directly affected logical explanation and permissive discipline. Second, Mothers' permissive discipline, logical explanation and punishment logical explanation directly affected their young children's adjustment. Third, mothers' child-rearing value partially indirectly affected their young children's adjustment through their discipline styles. Mothers' self-directed and social compliance child-rearing values indirectly affected their young children's adjustment through logical explanation; mothers' social compliance child-rearing values indirectly affected their young children's adjustment through permissive discipline. Mothers' self-directed child-rearing values indirectly affected their young children' adjustment through coercive corporal punishment. In conclusion, the results of this study implied the significance of mothers' parenting values as well as discipline styles to promote children's adjustment. In order to help children having more adjustment, the targets of the parent education and counseling should focus on mother's child-rearing values and discipline style.
